Fic title:
The Road to Awe and Wonder
Author name: twasadark
Artist name: helenorvana
Genre: RPF Gen (pre-slash) with het subplot*
Pairing: Jensen/Alona*
Rating: R
Word count: 35,000
Warnings: Infidelity
Summary: It is 700 ad and the world lies in ruin, the Dark Ages come to life. The Roman Empire has crumbled into something altogether new, Medieval Europe, hanging on to the remnants of Roman civilization while being shaped by the church.

In this land of relics and shrines knight Jensen of Ackerley wanders grief-stricken and purposeless until he takes on the challenge of guiding Lady Alona on a pilgrimage. Accompanied by the orphaned street thief Tristan of Jare, they travel from France to Rome to the center of the world - Jerusalem - across the glittering Mediterranean, facing dangers of the body and soul, the heart and mind.

Betas: Immeasurable thanks to corbyinoz for her encouragement, keen eye for detail, and passion for historical accuracy and jaimeykay for her honest critique and masterful understanding of characterization.
*Notes: Head over here if you'd like to know about the gen rating, the history of the era, the character names or if you'd like to ask questions or leave constructive criticism.
Thanks as well to wendy and thehighwaywoman for running such an amazing challenge - and to all the writers and readers who participate.

Yay, you've posted.

I'm looking forward to reading, and have download the pdf for over the weekend. x

Awesome!! Thanks for being so supportive! Hope you like it. :-)

omg, beautiful opening. I'm at work, sadly, so I'll finish tonight but your prose is lovely and I while I was hesitant about the subject and it's also het, which isn't my thing, this looks really good. ;)

Oooh - cool icon!

Thanks so much for giving it a shot. I know that it's kind of all over the place genre-wise, and het is a tough one for some people, but I hope you enjoy it anyhow. :-)

Yay, I'm saving this for later! I can't wait to read it, congrats on finishing :)

Thanks so much for your help! I'm afraid it isn't hugely different from what you read, but hopefully it's better.

awesome looking forward to reading

Thanks, love! Hope you like it! :-)

Thank you for posting at AO3. Makes it an easy download to my Kindle. Can't wait to read!

You're welcome! I have a Kindle too and I LOVE A03's download function!

I really loved this fic. I finished it this morning, and I've been thinking all day about what I thought of the fic and why I loved it. This is the first fic in a while that I've wanted to read all the way through. I had to take a break to go to an appointment, and the entire time I wanted it to end so I could finish reading this fic. It reads like a really engrossing novel. I also really want to know what happens next, and the aftermath of the affair.

You tell such a vivid tale, and the stylistic choice of using less modern prose didn't get in the way of telling your story. There's an emotional resonance to this story that I really loved.

The characters are really wonderfully written. I just really loved Jensen, his quiet competence. I really felt for Alona and Jensen. The way you wrote the build up to their affair was believable.

I'm curious about the more slashy sequel, because I wonder how you will deal with Alona in that sequel. I'm not expecting Alona to leave her husband and run off with Jensen, but I'm hoping that Alona's not completely forgotten.

I think this was one of my favorite fics I've read. Just really well done. I look forward to the sequel, and hopefully that's just as good.

Your comment is so incredibly gratifying to me, I am so glad that you have had just the reaction I was hoping for in a reader. Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know! I have been hoping that people will read this piece even though it's definitely not the norm in fandom (gen and het, oh my! lol).

I'm not yet quite sure what the future of Jensen and Alona is, to be honest. I can definitely see them meeting again sometime and Alona letting Jensen know that her child is their child. Whether that will come with the slashy sequel, I don't yet know. I'm so glad that the characters touched you enough for you to be interested in their futures, though.

I had to rec you at SOR!

OMG, honey! I'm floored! WOW! Thank you so so much! I don't even know what to say other than you've done me a great honor.

I've been slowly making my way through this year's BB fics and I just finished this. I thought you did a really great job with this story. I loved the historical setting and the characters you created. I thought it was so unique, I don't think I've read anything quite like it. Nicely done.

Thank you so much! I have plans to continue it for next year's BB. It takes me so long to gear up, lol. Lots of research!

Hi there. I too am slowly catching up with my fic reading. I tried to download the A03 file but the link seems dead. Do you have a PDF?

edited: OOOPs, never mind. read the the post more carefully.
